Each day, in the hospital, I am saddened to see the loss of loved ones, who are stricken too early and suddenly from the number one killer, atherosclerosis (cardiovascular disease).  While we cannot totally eliminate this disease, we can certainly make huge dents in terms of its occurrence and severity by educating ourselves about lifestyle and dietary practices.

 

I also convey the perspective of a parent, watching his young children grow and seeing my own parents age. My father Bob, who has heart disease, has done a good job of improving and maintaining his health.  My three young children, Joshua, Jordan and Jenna, remind me of the beauty, love, science and curiosity of mankind. I want to protect them from heart disease and cancer.  I am fortunate to have a loving and supporting wife Ceri, along with good friends and family.  I am grateful and would like to thank each and every one of them. I am also blessed with a second family called The LIFE Group. This is a dedicated group of individuals who care about their health and those around them, who continue to inspire all of us on our High Road to Health. Please join our family by coming to a LIFE meeting, a Health seminar, completing a 30 day health challenge, using this internet site or using the knowledge acquired and following your progress in one of Dr. Greg series of books or videos.  

 

The best model of health needs to incorporate the best of modern medicine with optimal lifestyle changes. While this is easier said than done, each one of us must take more responsibility for our own health. In addition, healthcare providers need to find newer solutions for risk factor modification.

I urge you to take a tour of the website and visit the patient corner where you will find the form section.  You can download a series of interactive sheets, such as the exercise prescription, as well as gain insight into diet, medications and the latest information on cholesterol management.  The site was created to share and learn from others.  I would enjoy your feedback and would like to hear about your solutions to help improve the health of our communities.  By doing so, we’ll constantly learn as well as improve our knowledge and our ability to help others.

Through this process you will become aware of negative lifestyle factors that contribute to poor health; hard work and perseverance can change your behaviors and you can become an example for your community and family. At the end of this health challenge, you will have an improved quality of life and feel great about yourself. Heart disease is a tough battle, but through extra time and effort, anyone can defeat atherosclerosis!

Preparing for your next visit 5 simple steps that will make it easier for you and your doctor to improve your health. After you sign up for a health challenge, you can fill out a personal profile that will allow you to monitor your risk factors (such as blood pressure, diet, etc.), as well as keep an exercise log and a list of your medications, which you can update. Bring this updated list with you each time you go to the doctor to ensure you get the best treatment possible. Your doctor can then make the best decisions on how to improve your health.

 

LIFE meetings the LIFE program is a fun and interactive way to educate yourself about improving and taking an active role in your health. It serves as an open and friendly setting for individuals to openly discuss their health concerns in the form of a monthly group support program. Watch videos, exchange recipes, or talk to Dr. Curnew one on one. It’s just an all-around great time!

 

Books I have dedicated a great deal of effort in studying the best of science on vascular health and have been successful in translating this information to other health care practitioners.  What I am trying to do now is translate “evidence-based medicine” to individuals in society who are truly interested in their health.  What has become apparent is that information is massive and medical science is constantly being updated with newer research.  We have decided to create a series of publications and videos.  Updates will be available on the website.  The books so far include:

 

 

1. The LIFE Workbook: This Workbook will help bridge the gap between patient and doctor by allowing you to prepare for your next health visit, monitor your progress, and keep track of important health documents.  It will give you the tools to monitor your heart health and be an active partner in your own healthcare.

 

2.  Dr Greg’s Facts on Blocked Arteries: What one should learn before it’s too late. This book starts with a health assessment questionnaire, followed by a description of traditional cardiac risk factors (cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, smoking, and family history).  This is followed by a discussion on cardiovascular investigations and treatment, the use of modern day medications, the management of stroke, and most importantly, how to manage the treatment gap.

 

3. Dr Greg’s Understanding Medical Research and New Approaches to Health: The book will discuss new emerging cardiac risk factors, help you to differentiate between good and bad research, and explore alternative medicine. You will also learn how to fight cancer.  Finally, we will discuss things we don’t like to talk about, such as wills, insurance, and power of attorney.

 

4. Dr Greg’s Your Health is in Your Hands: Facts on when heart disease begins (recognizing the signs), the power of diet, activity, and the modern approach to weight management.

 

5.  The LIFE Cookbook is a collection of healthy recipes put together by the LIFE group, along with scientific and practical information to help navigate through the unhealthy environment of North America.  You are what you eat!
